Photo-book Title?
The meaning of the word
'Title' - According to an etymological dictionary,
"c. 1300, "inscription, heading" on or over an object, originally especially the superscription on Christ's Cross, from Old French title "title or chapter of a book; position; legal permit" (12c., Modern French titre, by dissimilation), and in part from or merged with Old English titul. Both are from Latin titulus "inscription, label, ticket, placard, heading; honorable appellation, title of honor," a word of unknown origin."
Since this will be the "inscription" on my cover page, it must be of some relevance to the context of my book. All of my photographs are based in the space of my room, which is in my home. However, it hit me that if I compare the context of my physical home and my cultural home, they are significantly different. As a 1.5 gen immigrant, my now "home" looks significantly different than what it could've been. My family and I are beyond grateful and lucky to have been given a second chance in this beautiful country. I wouldn't have all of the luxuries I currently have if I were still living in México.
The lifestyle back at home is simpler and humbler, and for some, it is all about survival. To put this into further context, for some, you are lucky to have a bed, let alone your own bed that you don't have to share. Some families have to create their own furniture with bricks, sticks and whatever they can find to make their room function. It is also humbling to know that some people don't own mattresses but use wooden planks as a substitute. Some homes don't even have an actual room and merge their living room and their personal room in one. Or their kitchen and their room in one.
Looking at my room, and how I manage it, and how I organize my somewhat OCD hoarding problem, is something that would be overlooked as silly back at home. In a way, you can tell where the cultural bleeding happened and where it lingered the most and how my priorities do not depend on survival but rather consumerism. Although I still have those cultural references and values in my life, it is obvious to me that I have grown up in a different style of home with different norms, solely based on the fact that I grew up in Canada.
After contemplating all this, I now have to think about what to "inscribe" on my cover page.
The way I see it is, I can either go down the aesthetic route and title my book solely based on its physicality, or the deeper cultural reflection of my bleeding roots in two cultures.
