Project one - Post one
For project one, I decided to focus on flowers and natural textures. It is amusing how this photo came to be, as it was accompanied by many memories. I was at Costco with my roommate, and I saw these beautiful hydrangea flowers, but I immediately thought of a Mexican saying my mom used to say to me.
"Como decĂa mi abuelita: Hortensias en la casa, la hija no se casa." Which translates to "Like my grandma used to say: Hydrangeas in the house, your daughter won't get married."
Which I obviously thought was silly when I was younger. But as I age and pay more attention to my identity and my Mexican culture, the more I value those memories and superstitions.
And although they are beautiful flowers and I wanted to buy them, I heard my mom's voice in my head and feared that the saying would come true. So I didn't buy the Hydrangeas. Instead, I took a photo on my iPhone and kept it digital to avoid jinxing myself and the saying.
Apart from that being one of the reasons for my source selection, I also chose this image because of the beauty and rawness that come with nature. I have always been very fond of nature, and all types of butterflies, landscapes, flowers, rivers, mountains, tree close-ups, etc., and something in me is intrigued by how the distortion of this image will create an ironic statement of nature and destruction. Maybe it can be based around the climate change protest, or forest and natural habitat destruction for civilization. Or maybe it could be a message to plant a seed (metaphorically) to aid and make the audience realize the importance of nature. The idea that the image is ‘wilted’ but the flowers in the original photo are not, but the real ones are probably dead, is also another interesting perspective.
To bring these ideas to life, what I envision doing with this image is...
1. Altering colour, cropping image, adding grain/noise, applying blur, uploading, downloading as a smaller (compressed) file.
or
2. Limiting colour (not all colours are erased), printing, scanning, applying blur, printing, cutting it out, scanning, adding grain/noise, downloading as a smaller (compressed) file.
