Witten reflection for project 1
After experimenting with numerous new tools and alterations, I decided that I was done when I achieved a certain amount of depth and contrast, as well as a 'lack of life.' The idea for my project was to wilt the flowers, making them appear as though they're withering and drying. While keeping in mind Steyerl's perspectives from her essay "In Defence of the Poor Image." Steyerl discusses how the resolution of an image is a matter of class, as all the rich and high photo qualities are usually protected by copyright and shielded by a wall of money. However, almost all the photos that are easily accessible to everyone are considered poor because they can be viewed and accessed by anyone. In my opinion, flowers are often seen as a symbol of a poor image. Flowers can be overwhelmingly expensive when they're bought and cultivated by a florist or even a grocery store; however, the wildflowers from a field or forest are widely available, but at what cost should they be cut from their stem if they will wilt shortly after? Thanks to the medium of photography, I was able to keep the flowers in the photo alive, but kill them during the process of their project, while also keeping in mind that the flowers in the photos are probably wilted and dead. It is a beautiful ironic piece of work if we keep those three things in mind.
